Class Notes

Blade Runner Notes.
There are many elemtns in Blade runner which are Postmodern such as:
  • The blurring of boundries, like between past and present, as the film is set in the future, 2019, but yet still feautures elements from the eighties such as technology and fashion. Even though the technology is considered advanced it looks dated and old.
  • Additionally there is refernece to the present.
  • The film also includes graphic scenes which before in cinema would be considered unsuitable, therefore it is presenting the unpresentable.
  • Blade runner signifies freedom and self expression usuallly through violence or sexuality.
  • In postmodern films female characters are categorised under two categories which are Red and White. A Red women is usually sexualised, strong and independant, where as White women are middleclass, respectable and housewife characters. We see this in Blade Runner as Pris and Zhora are Red women and Rachel is White. Yet when she realises she is a replicant she becomes more sexual.
  • Blade runner comes under two main genres which are science fiction and detective noir.
